That's a funny thing - I ran our summer school shows (all Broadway
musicals coming from Tams, French, R&H, MTI, etc.) for 11 years. Always
prominent in the rental contract and in the books themselves were
warnings about fines for returning marked-up materials. We did our best
to erase everything, but every time I went back to double check, I
always found markings we'd missed. I'm sure some marks still got back in
the books we returned. I can't remember ever actually incurring a fine.
We *were* always charged for missing materials - usually a chorus book
or two that kids hadn't returned at the end of the run. It was easy
enough to notify the rental companies when we got parts that were
already heavily marked, but the bottom line is that I don't think they
really care much anymore. I have to say, too, that several shows we got
from MTI and R&H seemed like they'd been re-engraved using Finale or
Sibelius and bound with plastic spiral spines in soft covers, and they
were clean as new. I strongly suspected that they'd started simply
discarding the parts after one or two uses and were substituting new
parts instead of dealing with the accumulations of markings that used to
collect in those old manuscript parts with the hard board covers.
