Kevin,
Your rant is directed at the wrong party. It is the responsibility
of the RENTER to deliver legible, well maintained parts. You should
tell the librarian that you can't use the part - it is unreadable. If
enough people complain, you can bet that that Boosey (I think) will
get a nasty note from the orchestra demanding a refund because the
parts were unusable. This is how you can get better parts. Yes, there
are jerks who ruin the parts, but the rental company is responsible
for your part being a mess. They charge enough in rental fees that
they should be able to afford to replace unusable parts.
