Subj: [kl] bass clarinet repair

Fantastic! It *was* a combination; but while I had played and played with e=
ach screw, and concentrated on Screw 1, it was actually 2 that was a bit to=
o open. Many many thanks! A tough piece is coming ('Adnan Songbook' of Gavi=
n Bryars) that needs a lot of sneaking in on exposed high notes. Whew!=0APe=

e, 27 May 2008 01:34:55 -0400=0A=0AOn this model the lower register pad sho=
uldn't open at=0Aall when going from low notes to notes using the neck=0Are=
gister key.=0A=0AThere are three adjusting screws for this mechanism.=0AThe=
one at the top to the right of the body register=0Akey (let's call this on=
e 1), the one between the main=0Ajoints connecting the G/D touchpiece with =
the long=0Ahinge rod on the upper joint (2), and the screw for=0Athe G/D ke=
y itself at the end opposite to the pad (3).=0A=0AThe problem you describe =
will happen if there is=0Aslight gap in screw (1) between the screw and the=
part=0Aunder it, extending from the long rod. Closing that=0Ascrew until t=
here is no gap might be the correct fix=0Ato your problem. But, if screw (2=
) is closed too much=0Ait will also create the same gap in screw (1) so=0Ao=
pening screw (2) a little might be the correct=0Asolution. Or a combination=
of both of these screws.=0A=0AScrew (3) is not exactly related to this pro=
blem, but=0Afixing it could mean will have the opposite problem of=0Athe ne=
ck register key opening when playing notes using=0Athe body register key. T=
his can happen for example by=0Aopening screw (2) which is possibly what yo=
u need to=0Ado. This usually means screw (3) is too closed and you=0Aneed t=
o open it to allow the extension under screw (1)=0Ato move lower.=0A=0ABasi=
cally the entire mechanism should work that there=0Aaren't gaps between any=
of the screws (creating double=0Aaction) while still having the correct op=
ening for the=0Aregister pads.=0A=0AThis is not the most simple at first bu=
t if you are=0Amechanical you should be able to understand this after=0Aloo=
king at the mechanism for a while. If you are not=0Amechanical or is unable=
to understand it then I=0Arecommend to let a good(!) repairer do it.=0A=0A=
I hope this helps.=0A=0ANitai=0A=0A=0A=A0=0APeter Stoll=0A=A0=0ANEW WEBSITE=
