Subj: [kl] bass clarinet repair/adjustment and mechanism question
Date: Tue, 27 May 2008 00:21:10 -0400

Hi folks,=0APeriodically I'm faced with either my own bass or a student's d=
eveloping a problem with the register/octave key mechanism. I play a Buffet=
Prestige low C Mark 2, with the 3=A0low D's. The problem is a tiny bit of =
play with the octave pad that's on the clarinet body (vs.the one on the nec=
k).=A0For instance, when I play a=A0D just=A0under the staff (2 fingers) th=
at pad sits very firmly against the metal tone-hole. But when I add the reg=
ister key to go up to A3, there's a tiny movement of the pad away from the =
seat.=0AI wonder if it has to do with the=A0"compensating lever" you find o=
n this level of bass; try as I might I can't find the=A0'cure' for this, al=
though making sure the screws=A0around the=A0register mechanism are tight h=
elps. I've always had the sense that it's probably a lot simpler than I ima=
gine, but so far no luck.=A0=0AOf course I have 2 chamber shows the next 2=
=A0evenings, and this has=A0come back today with our sudden=A0local 'heat w=
ave' here in Toronto.=0AClark/Walter=A0anyone have any ideas?=0AThanks a lo=
