HI Alicia,

I have the one you are asking about and actually use it on a German
mouthpiece because it is easier than hand winding the string. I also use
a traditional Rover ligature as well.

I find that the Vandoren string ligature works wells, but be prepared
that it will not hold the reed as tightly as a traditional metal or
fabric style ligature will. This does not mean the reed moves around
while playing, as you can tighten it, but you will not be able to grab
your mouthpiece and remove it leaving the reed on while you swab out
your clarinet. The reed is almost certain to move a little. This is the
only thing that I can say in a negative way about it. Not sure if others
that have used it would agree. It does allow a lot of vibration from the
reed without damping the sound and I would compare it to any good
ligature in this respect.

On another note, I do think people tend to over-tighten a ligature
anyway. That can cause a good mouthpiece table to warp under all that
pressure. The Germans (and others) have been using string ligatures for
years without any real problems. When I saw Sabine Meyer in concert
several years ago she was using a metal ligature and I asked her why she
was not using the string. She told me that there was no real reason why
she used one over the other. It just depended on the mood she was in and
if she needed to be able to change out the mouthpiece quickly.

Hope this helps,

Tom Henson

Subject: [kl] klassik ligatures

Hiya,

Has anybody tried the klassik ligatures by vandoren? They're the woven=20
ones in the "German Style" (I guess as in emulating wound thread). I'm=20
kind of interested in them, since I haven't been too happy with the=20
ligatures I've been trying and I've always wanted to try winding thread=20
but it seemed too cumbersome. If anybody knows anything about them, I'd=20
appreciate it!

Thanks!
Alicia Byer
