OK, I'm now curious. Paolo says any oil but "mineral oil" applied in this
way will damage the reeds. Nancy is using reeds treated with almond oil, a
vegetable oil.

Paolo, if you tried a vegetable oil, what oil did not work well and what
damage was done?

Nancy, did you begin using almond oil on someone else's recommendation, or
have you experimented with other oils and settled on almond for some
specific reason?

Thanks,
Karl

I play on wooden mouthpieces that are oiled once a week with almond oil.

Naturally, the oil gets into the reeds. Like Paolo, I found that the reeds
last

much longer.

I finish the reeds first with Ridenour's ATG system, and then give a light
coat of

oil and lay them out on glass overnight. I wipe them in the morning to
remove any

remaining oil. They play consistently in hot, cold, dry or humid
conditions. I

have found that I never have to oil them again after the initial oiling. I

actually have two reeds that I finished last August and they still play as
well as

when I first started using them. In fact, I used one of them in a concert
Saturday

evening.
