When I was an undergrad and grad student at USC (California, not South
Carolina), I played all the clarinets, from Eb to contra-alto, in the
various performing ensembles. I grumbled a bit, then, but I'm glad that
William Schaefer had that policy. Whenever we did a difficult piece with an
exposed Alto clarinet part, I got the assignment, because he knew I'd figure
the part out. Same with the other instruments. I even did Basset horn in a
couple of the Strauss operas. This versatility has surely come in handy
through the years.
