Subj: [kl] Return to playing the clarinet

Tammy - I wish you lived near us in the area of Dublin Ireland - I, like
you, returned to clarinet playing a few years ago. I found an adult band to
play with and have been taking lessons again. Our adult band is made up of
people who are either returning to playing after a long absence or are
taking up an instrument for the first time. We call ourselves adult
beginners. This year we have been working in earnest toward having a
concert - and it all came together last Friday night. We invited family and
friends for our Spring is in the Air Concert. With help from a number of
more skilled players it was a great success. We were thrilled with
ourselves!

As to your question re books for adults, my teacher uses Rubank and a book
called 80 Graded Studies for Clarinet, edited by John Davies and Paul
Harris. And my teacher has me practicing scales until I am blue in the
face! At least I feel that is what he would like me to do. I think he is
an excellent teacher - I just wish I could make faster progress. I know I
should practice more.

Let us know how you get on with your clarinet playing. I have a son living
in Seattle and I visit him at least once a year - I would be keen to hear if
you find any opportunities for playing with other adult "returnees".
