In this case I think he's trying to help the string section, although I
think this won't help enough since there are passages where it switches
between measures quickly and where straight and hemiola are overlaid.
And I saw him "stutter" a couple of times where his motions were more
like a 2-beat, then 1-beat out of the three. And it's nowhere near as
cut and dried as West Side Story's infamous bits.

My take is that there are places where 6/8 definitely does *not* make
sense (e.g. the cello and bass intro), but there is no place where 3/4
doesn't make sense (even if you *could* think of it in 2 at that point).

Thanks for the input, we'll see if I/we can end up living with it. :-)
