Thanks, Paolo, for the kind words. K.464 might=20
never have been transcribed for clarinets had not=20
my nephew, Charles Andrews, a program host at=20
KUSC in Los Angeles, written to me several years=20
ago saying that he had transcribed the original=20
version for string quartet and thought that it=20
"might work for winds" and he sent me the=20
movement files. So I upgraded my Finale software=20
to the 2003 version so that I could read his=20
files. He had also said over the air at an=20
earlier time that Beethoven wouldn't compose a=20
string quartet in A without first "decomposing"=20
Mozart's K.464 to "see how he did it." That=20
hyperbole piqued my interest and I had to see what I could find out about=
it.

A group of clarinet friends with whom I play find=20
the 1st and 2nd movements to work=20
beautifully. In the 3rd, Andante, movement,=20
starting at measure 41 the 2nd clarinet has some=20
arpeggios possibly better played on a violin and=20
the 4th clarinet at measure 137 has some eighth=20
staccatos which might sound better on a=20
cello. In the 4th, finale, movement the 4th=20
clarinet has 4 sections of repeated eighth notes=20
which are a bit of a bore, but all things=20
considered, the quartet is a delight to=20
play. Thanks, Paolo, for giving this lovely piece a wider audience.
