<Does he touch on the Rimsky-Korsakov influence here? Ravel's
orchestration is based on Rimsky-Korsakov's piano edition, which
significantly modifies Mussorgsky's original.>
<It may not have been Ravel who tampered in this respect.>
Prausnitz states "Ravel's only willful change in an otherwise scrupulously
faithful translation of Mussorgsky's original text." Rimsky doesn't even
appear in the index of the 500+page book. However, pianists do often
mention differences between their text and the Ravel score: although these
seem to be details of articulation and dynamics rather than phrasing or
anything more substantial to affect the structure, this would merit deeper
investigation. Any takers?
