During one of our famous Promenade concerts a few years ago Leonard
Slatkin conducted an engrossing Pictures where each movement was by a
different arranger, ending with Sir Henry Wood's own version of The Great
Gate. I have a wonderful LP of the Philharmonia playing Vladimir
Ashkenazy's orchestration on the flipside of which he plays the original
piano version - stupendous playing on both sides. One of our UK
musicians (when one of his six children was ill and he stayed up all night
for some weeks - the child recovered) arranged it some years ago for
recorder orchestra in which version I've conducted it a couple of times and
this summer we'll perform it with our National Youth Recorder Orchestra.
True we miss the oomph for the ending, but the chicks and children play
nicely! Colin.
