Hi Fred,

While I cannot speak directly to U. Maryland, this has been my
experience at most archives, unfortunately. The good news is that most
archives are staffed by people who will do anything and everything they
can do to help you, but the reality is that most archives are rarely
funded and staffed to the point of being able to proactively do anything
and everything for every item in their inventory (including fully
documenting said inventory).

I have had several experiences where even phone calls didn't help
clarify items in an inventory, but I have never had a bad experience in
person. These people really are overwhelmed and are doing the best they
can do, but are absolutely dedicated and very good at their job.

Best wishes,

-Adam
