Hi Nancy,

The clarinet does look very nice, in very good condition for its age, and it
does look museum quality. The maker's mark is correct for EULER/FRNKFURT A/M
(am Main). Euler's workshop ran from 1810 to 1873. Comparing it with some in
the Shackleton Collection, this one looks to be somewhere in 1820 - 1850.
There is not one in the Shackleton collection though two or three are known
in museums, e.g. Providence, R.I.

I rather doubt it is Bb. A Bb instrument would be about 26" long; even if he
excluded the bell from his 22.5" (and that is something to check) 25.5" is a
bit short. It might be high pitch.

The mouthpiece looks good, though you can't tell without playing it. Quite
probably it would either work or be workable with refacing.

So it does look a very good price for a very good instrument, assuming it is
genuine and I can't see any reason why not. But don't assume you can play it
in pitch with anyone else!

Best, Keith

Collective wisdom:

I have been watching a clarinet on eBay and am wondering if it is a good
buy--

<An Exceptional BOXWOOD & IVORY Clarinet by EULER Item number:
190205108366 >.

Could someone take a look and email me back with an answer? The auction
ends in

four hours, but I would like to have an opinion anyway, even if the auction

closes. This particular instrument looks wonderful and seem inexpensive to
me, but

I don't really have any basis for establishing a price. I am trying to
decide what

sort of early instrument to buy to take to an early music festival this
summer. I

have looked at chalumeaux and early clarinets, and don't really know where
to start

when it comes to choosing my first one. Thanks.
