Thanks Wayne, I have been wondering about this for some time. I think I have
it straight now.

Howard Shertzer wrote, "It appears that he is playing on a basset horn in A.
Or an A clarinet with
a low C extension (I don't know the difference). In fact, what is a basset
horn, aside from the low C extension?"

Howard, would you like to see what these clarinets look like? Many people
are confused when they first hear of these different clarinets.

Martin appears to be playing the Buffet Basset Clarinet. Here's a photograph
from the Buffet exhibit of the 2006 NAMM of the Buffet Prestige Basset
Clarinet (in A, of course) on the left, the Basset Horn (in F, looking
roughly like an alto clarinet) on the right. Both play to low C in their
respective keys. Interestingly, the instrument in the center is another
Basset Horn, this one only playing to low Eb and therefore not as long as
it's companion to the right. It does not have the upturned metal bell. The
first Basset Horn part in the Mozart K361 does not require the 'basset'
notes, so this horn could be used for that. I believe all three horns are in
Buffet's catalogue, though I would assume they don't sell many of the center
one.
