Seems to me it depends on when you need to play this. If there's a
performance in the very near future, you aren't likely to be able to do much
about speeding your articulation technique - whatever you learn from any
suggestions you get here or anywhere else will take time to internalize and
under pressure of a performance you'll tend to revert to old habits until
that internalization has reached a fairly deep level through persistent
practice.

So the obvious short-term solution, if one is needed, is to add slurs to the
extent necessary to get you through the passage. 2-slurred-2-tongued is the
most obvious - slur more if you can't manage that, less if you don't need so
much help (does slurring 2 and tonguing 6 give your tongue enough of a break
to keep up?). You can "hide" a slur a little more by putting it on the first
two notes of beats 2 and 4 instead of starting with a slur on beat 1.
Beethoven will not return from the grave to take your first-born at midnight
even if you slur the whole thing. *The goal is to give a musical effect, not
to show how fast you can or can't tongue,* and the effect will be much
better if you maintain control than if you lose it. As Oliver mentioned, the
1st horn has an arpeggiated passage following yours that, because of range,
the leaps and the generally greater difficulty of a horn's response, may
prove even more challenging for the horn player. He or she may be happy to
negotiate a solution that will make both of your lives easier and keep your
approaches to both parts consistent.

Hi Folks,

I have been asked to play first clarinet in the Beethoven Octet. A great
honour and an exciting challenge.

There is one bit that I can't quite get my head around. In the first
movement at bar 154, the 1st clarinet has a run of 16ths. In the recording I
have of Sabine Meyer's Ensemble, she tongues this very delicately and it
sounds wonderful. However, no matter how hard I practice, I cannot get the
tonguing fast enough.

Are there any tricks to getting it working?

Thanks for any advice

Benedict
