Terry,

A musician customer the other day told me a similar story about a very expensive implanted hearing aid. The insurance company turned him down the first time. He went to the doctor and the doctor wrote an appeal stating that it was needed for the musicians career and the insurance company agreed to pay for it.

So appeal to your insurance company, and include letters from relevant parties.
