Last evening in Palo Alto, California, there was a concert given by the
Philharmonia Baroque, conducted by Nicholas McGegen, with soloist Robert
Levin,

It's an original instrument orchestra and a delight to hear.

The soloist played the Beethoven 5, and the orchestral played both the
Schubert 3 and an overture by Anton Reicha, of the million or so wind
quintets.

The Reicha, a work from around 1830 was in 5/8 time. I don't know if I ever
heard a work earlier than this one in that meter. I wasn't crazy about the
piece, but I found the use of the meter interesting for the era.

Levin's performance of the concerto was strikingly effective.

However, it turned out that the clarinet playing in the Schubert third
symphony was stupendous. The first was Erich Hoeprich (sensational in his
very important clarinet solos in the Schubert) and Diane Heffner. He played
a Carfl Augus Grenser, ca. 1785, and she played a Daniel Bangham made in
1933 after a Grenser 1810.

Wonderful evening.
