LOL! Thank you, but I should have spelled out that I found the name of the
original purchaser, M. Loye, on the 1921 store receipt for the two
clarinets. Of course, "One never knows, do one," but I doubt that his
mother was Mother Goose.

I bought the pair of clarinets from a local auction (in Virginia, USA) last
week. The receipt came with the package. It looks to me as if M. Loye was
an active musician who was discriminating in his purchases, as I would
expect from a serious amateur or a professional. He took excellent care of
his clarinets. The pads and corks are completely age-deteriorated and will
all need replacing and there's a small, repairable crack in one tenon socket
of the clarinet in A, but otherwise these instruments are in good condition,
considering that it's clear nobody has played them in decades. They must
have been stored clean and dry.

Yes--I typed the street name from memory and should have looked at the
receipt. M. Loye lived at 54 Rue d'Assas.

Thank you very much for the information. The typed name on the receipt is
definitely Loye, not Loyer, and at a different street number, but the
proximity of the addresses and the similarity in the names could be more
than a coincidence. Most interesting. Also, if I could type "Rue d'Asse"
when it should have been "Rue d'Assas," then certainly the person who typed
the receipt might have mistyped the customer's name--and family members
might have been living near each other for generations.

I may be able to find more information here in the USA as well. The sellers
are anonymous at this auction, but I'm asking the auctioneer to give my
name and contact information to the consigner of the clarinets, in hope that
this person might be willing to get in touch with me. Unfortunately, I
probably won't be able to pursue this matter any further right now. Last
night, I got word of a family emergency. Unless it turns out to be a false
alarm, I will need to get on a plane within the next day or so and may be
away from home for some time. I won't have Internet access from my parents'
house. Please forgive me if there's a long delay before I reply to any
further correspondence about M. Loye.

Oliver and Cristophe, thank you again!
