Hello, Everyone.=20

THANK YOU, to so many of you, for so many
helpful answers and advice about Contra Wood-
wind Literature. I still don't know of an actual
Concerto written FOR a Bb Contra Bass Clarinet,
but it seems reasonable to me, that Contra Bassoon
works should fit the same range.

BRAVO to Mr. Barton Cummings for writing a
Concertino for Contrabassoon and Winds that got
premiered and recorded by Susan Nigro! I look
forward to hearing it.

Do any of you know Mr. Tommy Strong? He
may be on the Doublereed List, and owns the
Bassoon List. He's a professional woodwind player,
in the Northwest Florida and Southern Georgia area.
He has played many different woodwinds during
his career, but in the last 6 years or so, has focused
mostly on playing Recorder, Bassoon and Contra
Bassoon.=20

Last September I started sketching an Andante
"Nocturne" for Contra Bassoon, Harp and Strings,
and sent it to Mr. Strong. He liked it, one thing led
to another, and now I am finishing an Allegretto
First Movement of a Concerto for Contra Bassoon
and full orchestra, which will be about 12 minutes
long (containing my 2-minute Cadenza).

The "Nocturne" will now become the Slow,
Middle Movement, and I've already written about
2 minutes of it. I have ideas for the Third Movement,
but haven't sketched anything yet.

It is my goal to write a piano-accompanied sonata,
a Konzertst=FCck accompanied by string orchestra, and
an orchestra-accompanied full concerto for Every
Major Instrument of the orchestra. I already have 6,
for various instruments. Whenever I write a concerto,
I always make a Full Score in C, a Full Transposed
Score and a Piano Reduction for rehearsals and
recitals. That can be very practical, for soloists who
can afford and accompanist, but not an orchestra.

And also in following Hindemith Practicality, I
transcribe works of mine, where it is tasteful and
practical. I am making a point to keep the Accom-
paniment out of the way of the Soloist's Melody
Line at both Written Pitch and Sounding an Octave
Lower. That way, eventually this concerto can be
transcribed to Bb Bass Clarinet, E-Flat Contralto
Clarinet, or sounding an octave higher on Bassoon
or Bb Bass Clarinet. That might help the Literature
of each of those instruments.

I gotta get back to the Happy Farm.
