Dan,

Did Dover use something other than the Sussmayr completion you're referring
to? It shows the three trombones (alto, tenor and bass) in the Confutatis as
well.

And while I'm looking at it, it's a pointless detail, but why are the
timpani (in my Dover score) listed between the trumpets and the trombones?
Was that a custom or an idiosyncrasy of Sussmayr? Quickly checking the
Mozart scores I have on hand, I find I have only one, the (shudder) Kalmus
score of the Grand Mass K. 427 that even has trombones, and that score
groups them, as I'm more used to seeing, with the other brass, i.e. after
the trumpets with timpani after the trombones.

This is an ambiguous question. If you are asking what the instrumentation
is of the Confutatis and Lacrymosa that was in Mozart's head when wrote what
he wrote (which isn't very much), the answer is no one knows.

But if you are asking what the instrumentation is in the Sussmayr
completion, the answer for the Confutatis is 2 basset horns, 2 bassoons, 2
trumpets, timpani, and strings.

The Lacrimosa is the same as the above but with 3 trombones added.

Hi Listers:
I am betting someone can answer this question for a choral colleague
Thanks

Question for you:
What is the orchestration of the two choruses Confutatis and Lacrymosa of
the Mozart Requiem? In the front of my score there is a list of the entire
instrumentation, but I seem to have no way of knowing more precisely what is
needed for just those two movements. Any ideas?
Brian
