Ted,

I recently purchased a Backun 64mm to use on my Selmer Centered Tone. It so
flattened the pitch that I'm returning it. I found the Doctors much more
satisfactory, though it does not make for the boom of a cannon! It is
fabulously smooth, including the crossing of the break.

Your jazz sound is similar to that of John Crocker (England). Are you
familiar with him?

Check this out.

Ellis---I'm using the ringless Morrie Backun barrels on both my 10Gs. Makes

the instruments sound like a cannon!

Take into account---I only play jazz and klezmer! My legitto days were over

after 1959. I did a performance under Paul Hindemith, and told my
then-girlfriend (now a spouse of 47 years standing!), that I had fulfilled
one of my ultimate ambitions, and was going to hang it up for symphony
playing!

Actually---I wish that someone would have told me: "Man, your natural
clarinet sound is too big for the sensibilities of USA orchestral playing!"

Even after that great teacher, Bill Osseck, tried to put some "refinement"
in my sound by switching me to an Elmer Wical refaced glass mpce, it didn't
do too much good!

Funny---I left Eastman after 2 years, and went to Boston Univ. Got into the

orchestra right off, and was playing principal 2nd clar, under Russell
Stanger's baton. The first player was Efrain Guigui---a tramsplant from
Argentina---a great guy of incredible chops who played with that big South
American sound---like Paquito D'Rivera. We used to practice together, and
we played the Ravel "Rapsodie Espanol" duo clarinet cadenza in concert!

Efrain's clarinet sound was too big for USA performance practice, so he
switched to conducting. He had the Vermont Symphony for about 20 years, and

did guest conducting shots all over South America, and in Europe. He just
passed away this year.

Me---I love my sound, and it works for what I do. Check me out on
YouTube---and this was before I got my Backun! Now that I purchased that
barrel, I sound only moreso!!!!

My only complaint is that 64 mm is the shortest they make!

Good luck in your quest! Ted Casher
