There ARE low Es for the clarinet in the A part of the Boosey edition
in the third movement, measures 151 and 167.

Now, the reason why I started this thread. Over 4 decades ago,
around 1964, I was in high school and already buying all the clarinet
music I could find at the G. Schirmer store at 4 East 49th street in
Manhattan, NY. One of those pieces was the Bartok contrasts. It had
both the all Bb version of the clarinet part, and the Bb-A
version. But I did not have an A clarinet at the time, so I used
only the Bb version of the work. Over the years, although I acquired
many clarinets (including some As), I never really thought about
working up the piece with the change of clarinets, since it was so
second nature (easy) for me to play as I had been doing for so
long. So last week I gave it a shot, and it really was quite
unpleasant toughing out riffs that had been so relatively
simple BUT, now, a week later, it is starting to fall into place
and I see that some of the A fingerings indeed DO make life
simpler. My guess is that the all Bb part is included to accommodate
those without A clarinets. So why doesn't the Francaix concerto have
an A part?

Thanks for the comments on the matter. I guess I will do it with
both clarinets from now on.
