It does arise with other instrumentalists. I have been at rehearsals
when flutist used their flute rather than the prescribed alto flute
because the alto flute never played in its lower register. The
conductor insisted, rightly so, for the alto flute. It has a unique
sound. It isn't always about low notes but also quality. Another
instance that aggravates conductors (as well as composers dead or
alive) are fiddle players not bringing mutes.
