Thanks for your thoughtful reply, and the interesting reference. Yes, that
is Scruton's point, though he further distinguishes metaphor from simile. A
metaphor uses a situation that cannot possibly REALLY apply to the one under
discussion; the wanton wind cannot really impregnate the sails. The image,
however, suddenly stimulates one's imagination. The example you quoted in
your reference, about the key of an organ releasing the note from the pipe
is, I think, more of a simile; there is a similarity between the situations
which illuminates the concept of releasing, rather than striking, the note.

I also like the method of using multiple metaphors to avoid confusion.

Now I must go and re-read your chapter on The Diaphragm And All That ...
