you don't know, what a blessing subtitles are! My ears used to be very
sharp: as a teacher I often heared my pupils discuss a question, even when
there fellows didn't hear even when they were sitting in just one row in
front of them. But then the quality of my hearing began to deteriorate
rapidly, and nowadays I cannot hear foreign broadcastings (and even Flamish
TV is a foreign broadcasting!) without special aids. Fortunately text tv
subtitles most of the broadcastings on most of the channels we can receive
here, that are of interest to me! The French channel Canal 5 always had the
habit of subtitling French films in French, as they were aware the French,
spoken in the films they usually broadcast is difficult to understand even
for native French speakers. But problems with hearing begin to be paramount
even with Dutch broadcastings, and I am very happy with subtitling!.

Maybe it is a matter of getting used to.

A few years ago I was in Spain. I had no problems understanding Spanish
people at that time. But then I went to an American movie, that was
postsynchronised in Spanish. It was a disaster. In the beginning I tried to
follow what people were saying. But you read their lips in American, and
hear them speak Spanish: You hear and read nothing, but really nothing at
all!. I still don't know, what the film was about, as every time I thought I
understood, something happened to destroy my understanding!
