I can't imagine I-Tunes transforms the file in any important way, and the
steps you use up to that are exactly what I did, only the viola sounded like
a piano. I haven't come back to this project since I posted - another one
has come up as a result of a Christmas gift I got this week - so I haven't
looked, but I'm sure this approach *ought* to work perfectly well and that
my Finale installation is defaulting to some setting that's interfering - or
it could even have been the player I was testing the audio files on. I'm
certain it isn't a difference between Mac and PC - it's too basic a
function, and MakeMusic has now been doing the Windows version too long for
something that obvious not to work on the Windows side.

Thanks - you've confirmed that what I was trying to do *should* work. I'll
be getting back to the project after New Year's Day.

On my mac I just open the score, delete the clarinet track, use SAVE
SPECIAL to save it as an audio file and then export the saved file to
I-TUNES, from which I can burn an audio cd. I generally do two files;
one rather slower. It works a treat
