One of the earliest African American players in the NY Philharmonic (if not
the earliest), was hornist Jerome Ashby. He joined the orchestra on August
6 1979 as associate principal horn.

He died after a long bout with prostate cancer on Dec. 26, 2007. His last
concert with the Philharmonic was on Dec. 1. In addition to his duties as
hornist with the orchestra, he also was principal Wagner tuba player, and
was on the faculty of Julliard, the Manhattan School of Music, the Curtis
Institute, and the Aspen Music Festival School. He leaves a wife, four
daughters, and one grandchild.
