I believe that it is absolutely wonderful that so many important players as
well as equally competent but lesser known group of clarinetists have
incorporated the C clarinet into their playing habits. And the influence of
KLARINET must take some part of the credit for this. This board has been on
line for a number of years and I was on it very early. At that time, hardly
anyone even considered having and playing a C in concert work. If anything
it was derided as unnecessary because of transpositional skills. Some heavy
duty and bloody arguments ensued.

But then as the European orchestras began to use them, and American
orchestras followed suit, the acceptance of the instrument was more and more
broad.

Today, the only really negative attitude about the instrument derives from
the cost of having a third clarinet, but even that entirely extra-musical
objection is disappearing.

We have battled the C clarinet question for some 15 years, and it is safe to
say that some part of the field is ours. The recognition of the importance
of the instrument insinuates iself into all levels of clarinetdom.

Next we begin the argument of the clarinet in B-natural, which Mozart uses
twice!! And after that, the D clarinet.
