While a grad student I performed Stockhausen's Kreuzspiel (1951), the Adieu
Quintet (1966) and his Ylem (1972, on a recital conducted by the composer. I
remember all the pieces were very challenging to us. We were required to
perform unnatural acts on our instruments (!). He was a real taskmaster, and
not easy to get along with, during the course of the many rehearsals.
Stockhausen is not a composer I'd listen to on a regular basis, and I don't
really think his impact on the musical world was that great, IMHO. But what
do I know......
