We went to a concert the other night in Bakersfield. Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra has appeared on Public Broadcasting lots and I assumed we would have a pleasant evening. But it was more than pleasant; I had a wonderful time. The attitude of Rieu and of the orchestra is so light hearted and beautiful, I will recommend seeing them to anyone. Rieu wants to make classical music more fun, and his manner and that of his orchestra seems, honest, not contrived. I love the formal atmosphere of the usual concert, but I know that it is not so pleasant for people who do not know much about music.

When we sat down, the stage was set in foofy white Christmas decorations. A recording of 76 Trombones started playing and Rieu and the orchestra marched down the aisles waving their bows and smiling at us all. The women were dressed in beautiful ball gowns. Throughout the concert players are smiling, flirting, even clowning. It was easy to relax and give numerous standing ovations and to dance in the aisles, and to understand that the whole point is to enjoy the music. This would be a great atmosphere for children, or for people who know nothing about classical music.
