For what it's worth, Jean-Pierre Rampal used music
regardless of the setting. His attitude was that he
played so many different pieces he simply couldn't
memorize all of them and also he didn't trust his
memory.

To me, the musical results are all that counts and if
having the music in front of you helps, then use it. I
certainly did for more than 40 years and would still
do so today if I were still active as a performer.

I know, I know. All the state honor bands and college
and university music major programs have "rules" about
memorizing music. If you have to memorize a couple of
pieces to get through the program, then do it. You
won't be in college forever, or at least that it is
hoped you are not.
