I guess it's all just a matter of preference. I've never known that a clarinetist must memorize. I do know it's a common practice with pianists.

I dunno, but I will add that with my age, and all of my life's chaos I'll be lucky to remember my home phone number much less an entire recital reproitore!

Just my humble opinion! I am not here to insult anyone else.

Over the weekend during my first ever recital I wondered why the bulk of musicians
(meaning aside from popular music performers) read music during performance rather
than playing from memory.

I had my part committed to memory. I still looked at the part on the stand during
the performance. Did I actually read? I don't think so...
