Subj: [kl] Finding a mouthpiece

Hi:

I've been a lurker and sometime subscriber to this list for a few years. I
need some ideas on purchasing a new mouthpiece.

I currently play a Vandoren A3 crystal mouthpiece. It has a large tip
opening and a fairly short facing. Previously I played a Selmer HS** which
also had a rather large tip opening. I like the A3 because it has good
resistance using a Vandoren #3 V12 or the heavier 56 Rue Lepic. The sound
seems to have good body throughout the dynamic range.

The primary reason I'm looking for a new mouthpiece is that I'm returning to
a double lip embouchure after many years playing single lip. A friend
suggested I try a lighter (weight) mouthpiece.

I haven't tried any new mouthpieces for a long time. My dilemma is that most
popular mouthpieces have a much smaller tip opening than I remember liking.
My recollection is that smaller tip openings don't give the resistance I
like and, consequently, they sound reedy and thin to my ear.

Most of the playing I do is in chamber music groups. Am I going down the
wrong path thinking I need an open tip and short facing?

Any ideas are most appreciated.
