It would not be appropriate for me personally to pay tribute to Bill here.
Others better qualified to do so will follow, but his combination of talents
as a scholar and player was a truly rare gift. It was my very great
privileged to have known him for several years and spent time
in his company. His astonishing library was overflowing with
encyclopaedias, journals and works of reference on music
in every European language you could possibly imagine,
rare editions, composer's manuscripts and even a pedal piano.
He was thrilled to play piano duets with Thea King from time to time.
The tragic news of his illness broke among the inner circle
several days ago, the details of which are a family matter.
We feared the worst and it came to pass. New Langwill will
remain his monument. A second revision was in preparation
and his book on the bassoon for Yale University Press may
now never be finished. Before the newspaper obituaries appear,
