I am not aware of an orchestra (and by this you must mean the
orchestras management) asking for their players to play certain
instruments. There are occasionally principals that want the other
players in their sections to play certain instruments, and under
certain conditions this is either acceptable or an entirely
unprofessional request.

But, to the question at hand. I play Selmer Signatures, and recently
have had a student get a Selmer Recital. They are both wonderful
horns, but not as inexpensive as the Buffet R-13, which is also an
excellent horn. Though I think they're not quite as good (but still
very fine horns), many people like the LeBlanc Opus and
Concerto. The best way is to go somewhere and try a bunch of
each. The only place in the entire US that I know of where you can
do this is the Woodwind and Brasswind in Indiana. Anyone else have
places to recommend?
