Dear Sean,

Off list - thanks for your list. A couple of names I wasn't
familiar with. You might be interested in one of my own groups - although I
don't think any of us are exactly virtuosos (!)

Dear Penny and others,

Martin Frost is great. It's nice to see more people embracing free
improvisation. The sounds he's making are great, but nothing new, and if
you
want to hear more of it on this side of the Atlantic, I suggest you
all seek out
the improvisations in recording and performance of William O. Smith, Eric
Mandat, Francois Houle http://www.francoishoule.ca/ , Jesse Canterbury
http://www.jessecanterbury.net/ , and others. There's quite a huge scene of
free improv in Seattle and the Northwest, and I had the great pleasure of
jamming with Bill, Eric, Jesse, and my student Beth Fleenor (also a
very creative clarinetist and improvisor) a few years back. I would
like to do it
more often.

I encourage you all to try it and explore the sounds that are possible on
your
clarinet.

Cheers,

Sean
