A slightly different perspective on this, courtesy of a friend who is a
psychologist and therapist. It's normal in this field to charge for
cancelled appointments unless 24 hours' notice is given but my friend
had an interesting take on it---that if a charge was to be justified the
therapist should spend that time thinking about and focusing on the patient.

I think the reason for not being at a lesson has to be suitable as in a school/band required function, sudden illness, sudden death in the family, etc. But trick-or-treating doesn't cut it. And if I can't get my students to move up to fill the time, then that's a half an hour that I'm sitting there NOT getting paid.

A month's notice should be enough for _any_ reason!
