I do depend on my private lesson teaching income almost exclusively;
however, I am not terribly concerned with the reason for the cancelled lesson as
long as the student lets me know in advance. I have a policies and procedures
handout that each student gets at his/her first lesson with a contract the
parent and student must sign and bring back to the next lesson. In my policies
and procedures I ask that the student let me know by 9 PM the night before
the lesson or in the morning (if the child wakes up ill and does not attend
school) before the lesson is scheduled to begin or else they are charged the
lesson fee. I teach at school during band classes, which is why I allow
students to call if they are sick and do not come to school the day of the lesson.
I also charge a month in advance, so a "properly" cancelled lesson will
result in a credit on the next month's invoice.
