Daniel,

I think the answers you get will depend to an extent on how much the =
teacher
depends on private teaching fees to provide his/her basic living =
expenses.
I've never had a strict policy because my livelihood came mostly from =
the
school district where I taught. Performing fees and private lesson fees =
(in
that order) provided extra pocket money that I was fortunate never to =
really
need desperately. Teachers I know whose main source of income is their
private teaching do require at least 24 hours' notice and, for some
teachers, even then the notice only entitles the student to a make-up =
lesson
at another mutually convenient time, not a refund (most of these =
teachers
charge in advance by the month).

However, I've always felt the need to be at least a little flexible
regardless of what I set up in advance with parents as a criterion for
excusing an absence. I would feel like the Grinch That Stole Halloween =
if I
tried to make an issue of missing a lesson to go Trick-or-treating. I =
think
I'd let the kid have his/her fun.

My opinion, FWIW.

Karl

Subject: [kl] Lesson Cancellation Policy

Hi list,

Just wondering what other private lesson teachers do for cancelled =
lessons.

Around here the standard is 24 hours notice some say 48 hours. But do =
you
care why or just that they give you early notice?

I had a student say they wouldn't be at his lesson on Halloween. I =
think
the reason for not being at a lesson has to be suitable as in a =
school/band
required function, sudden illness, sudden death in the family, etc. But
trick-or-treating doesn't cut it. And if I can't get my students to =
move up
to fill the time, then that's a half an hour that I'm sitting there NOT
getting paid.

A friend of mine said that as long as they give adequate notice, he =
doesn't
care.

Thoughts?
