I have to say that in my experience and with my buddies while I was in
the Navy (though that was way long ago) the recruiters don't lie. We
either didn't realize what "subject to the needs of the service"
_really_ meant or we didn't ask the right questions. I know there have
been expose's of recruiters lying, but I think it's far less frequent
than people think. People _sell themselves_ on the idea and miss a lot
while a recruiter is saying something "sotto voce".

If it ain't on paper, it doesn't exist. Even if it _is_ on paper, it's
still "subject to the needs of the service".

For the record, I went in during a "hot war", went overseas, stayed 8
years, and loved most of my time.
