Quintet of the Americas in Concert at Brigham Young University –Idaho on
October 3

New York, NY – The Quintet of the Americas will present a concert on
Wednesday, October 3, 2007 – 7:30 PM at Barrus Concert Hall, 525 South
Center St., on the campus of Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho.

Repertoire for this performance, which is sponsored by Center Stage,
will include Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Samuel Barber’s Summer
Music, Colombian Dances from the Quintet’s collection of traditional
South American dances, Villa Lobos’ Quinteto em Forma de Chôros,
Gershwin’s “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess, James Cohn’s arrangement of
Arkansas Reel, as well as music by Dr. Louis W. Ballard, the Quintet’s
own Matt Sullivan, Charlie Parker (arr. Edmund Cionek) and Louis Moreau
Gottschalk.

This performance is especially significant for the Quintet, as Dr. Bill
Holman, original/founding clarinetist of the ensemble when it was in
Bogota, Colombia, is today the faculty clarinetist at BYU-Idaho.

The Quintet of the Americas, consisting of flutist Sato Moughalian,
oboist Matt Sullivan, clarinetist Edward Gilmore, hornist Barbara Oldham
and bassoonist Laura Koepke, was formed in Bogota, Colombia in 1976 by
U.S. citizens who were principal wind players in the Colombian National
Orchestra. The group relocated to New York City in 1979 and has since
enjoyed an international career that has taken them to concert halls
throughout the Americas, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. Two time
recipients of ASCAP-Chamber Music America Awards for Adventuresome
Programming, the Quintet's repertoire represents works from composers
with a wide range of aesthetic viewpoints. Their latest CDs are Karel
Husa: Recollections on New World and Dancing in Colombia on the MSR
label. They have also recorded for CRI, Newport Classics, MMC and XLNT.
The Quintet has been a past recipient of the Chamber Music America
Commissioning Award for new works from David Chaitkin and Judith Sainte
Croix. They have also been awarded a three-year CMA Residency Award for
work in Chicago and honored with grants and awards from the National
Endowment for the Arts, NY State Council on the Arts, NY City Department
of Cultural Affairs, Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Mary Flagler Cary
Trust and the Serge Koussevitzky Foundation of the Library of Congress.
They are in residence in The Department of Music and Performing Arts in
The Steinhardt School at New York University where they lead a Summer
