<<<Kevin, the kind of stuff you can get out with Q-tips is not what I am
talking about.>>>

Well, it's possible that there's different breeds of crud in sunny
California than up here in the subtropical rainforest. Our diet is
different, too - lots of seafood and the occasional banana slug. I suspect
that we're talking about the same generic ick, perhaps with the dreaded waxy
yellow buildup.

Q-tips alone won't remove built-up crud of a high depository order. Vinegar
will dissolve calcium deposits, though, and I will also use the occasional
toothpick to dig out the nastiest bits. If done often enough, though, I
find that I won't have a buildup to remove.

Of course, it's possible that your students put other stuff in their horns.
(I shudder at the thought.)

FWIW, the amount of this stuff that builds up in a plastic clarinet - at
least *my* plastic clarinet - is negligible. I surmise that it is because
the minerals have no pores in which to deposit, or "hold on to." OTOH, I
suppose it could be radioactivity or magic.
