So much of this discussion is semantics. What is
"blown out"? It is a vague expression, and as a vague
expression it doesn't provide any information to most
of us. I think there's complete agreement here that
Fred's clarinet is not well described as 'blown out'.
Something is wrong with it and a good technician could
tell us specifically what that is.

Robert, thanks for the interesting ideas about the
conical bore of an oboe crossing the grain instead of
being parallel. Would not another factor affecting
oboes be the small dimensions of the upper joint? A
two thousanth of an inch swelling is relatively much
larger with respect to the 3/16 inch (~.180") small
end of an oboe bore than to a 1/2 inch
(~.570")clarinet bore.
