Hello,
I am an active duty Air Force bandsmen. I can tell you
the following after 7 years of service:
1. THe Air Force treats its musicians better than any
other branch. You are a MUSICIAN FIRST and an airmen
second.
2. Bandsmen do deploy, but so far only rock bands have
gone over, and your job will be to entertain the
troops, not to guard anything or go on dangerous
missions.
3. The Air Force bands are all concert bands of about
45 people, from which you get woodwind quintet, brass
quintet, rock band, clarinet quartet, and jazz band.
The concert band tours a few times a year as do the
smaller groups.
4. If you win an audition, you can always do your four
years then get out and use the GI Bill to go to
college.
5. It is the military, and there definitely will be
people even in the band who really care about how
shiny your boots are and how pressed and starched your
uniform is.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Like I said, I'm active duty and have an insider
perspective on all this.
Crystal
