Vincent,

I think your first question is the most important. The answer is that,
although bands have been non-combat units since World War II ended, you are
still in the military and are always available for assignment "according to
the needs..." of whichever service you've joined.

The likelihood may not be high at least in the "special bands," which are
permanent assignments for the length of your enlistment, that you'd enlist
as a band member and end up with a weapon in your hands (barring any serious
misconduct on your part), but it isn't impossible.
