Dan, (and anyone else who wants to continue this strand),

I am not down on old horns--I am still playing on the set of 10M's that
I bought new in 1972. Like you and (San Francisco technician) Daniel
Deitch, I am convinced that they don't "blow out." (Daniel's persuasive
proof is in the way some classical originals survive with the bore in
excellent condition.) However, if I were 22 years old and aspiring to a
job in the next great symphony orchestra, I would not stick with 35 year
old (or in the case of the McGinnis instruments, more) clarinets as my
principal set.

Nor is this something I'd be dogmatic about. As I said, a college
student should be thrilled to play these horns. I might be thrilled to
play these horns. Nothing like a superb old Buffet for lustrous sound.
But next year's superstar in the making is most likely going to be
looking for something new, given what's out there.

Remember how you switched to a new basset horn when I wasn't looking?
