Last night I had the pleasure of hearing Todd Levy and Erika Shrauger play
the wonderful clarinet parts of Cosi fan tutte. I really don't know who
played first but I was told that it was Todd. Splendid playing from the
clarinets, but the overall performance of the work was lackluster. This is
surprising because one almost always gets a grand performance in Santa Fe,
but not last night. The blame falls on the conductor William Lacey, a man
without the slightest ability to generate energy. Slow was too slow. The
performance was endless, and for a Mozart lover that is something I thought
I would never say about Cosi fan Tutte.

Two other clarinet players are with the orchestra when the occasion
warrents. Kyle Knox plays basset horn in the Strauss Daphne, and Mark Dubac,
bass clarinet.
