The idea of the German is simply to tell you that the two
identical parts are supplied so that each player knows what the
other is doing at every moment. It's a tough piece and both
players need to know that.

I always felt that it was a very sensible solution to a
complicated problem. The pieces are difficult and both artists
have to know the exact nature of what each player is doing at any
moment. But the down side that comes with this solution is that
the page turns for the clarinetist (who is generally used to a
lot of stuff on any printed page) are troublesome and difficult
to manage. When I played the work, I memorized it (after hours
and hours of rehearsal with the pianist) so that I did not have
to be concerned about the page turns.

The pianist had a page turner.

Subject: [kl] Berg Five Pieces

Hi folks,

I'm working this up for the first time, and have
noticed that it comes with 2 copies of the score.
Where it says "Clarinet in Bb" in the score there's a
footnote in German that neither my limited German, nor
Babelfish, nor my Dad have managed to fully translate.
Can anyone help? (I can guess the general meaning but
want to really know the specifics).

Thanks!

Peter
