Brian,

Over the years I have had several students go through this experience.
Students generally experience discomfort and should consider various
materials to cover the entirety of the teeth (cigarette paper, for
example, but don't bring it to school!) and dental wax, but I have to
say I have never had a student who ultimately did anything other than
work through the initial discomfort and get used to the braces.
